Before the school was built, children in Feres Mai walked three hours to meet with other villagers for lessons taught under large trees, so the children could stay cool while they learned. There was a morning session, and then a second group of children would meet for an afternoon session. Medhine was in the afternoon session, and while she was walking home in the evening, she got tired and fell asleep under a tree. Hyenas killed her while she was sleeping.

The new buildings include a library, administrative building and a lab and have the capacity to house 1,000 students. Here some of the students attend class on one of the new buildings.

Lidia still has eight brothers and sisters who live in Feres Mai, and she went home in early 2006 for a dedication ceremony in the village for the new school. At the ceremony Lidia was honored (above). She's carrying the bouquet, and is walking beside her mother. Many of her nieces and nephews now get to attend the school.

The supplies for the buildings came from nearby towns and were driven in by truck; many of the villagers moved closer to town during the construction because of the jobs the school created.
